We introduced out of the box alerting and part of the experience is using Setup Mode to configure the alerts when they are in an idle state. This doesn't work on cloud as we intentionally disabled it as it had only been used for the metricbeat migration, which cloud doesn't currently support.

We need to change this so cloud users are enable to see and enter Setup Mode to configure idle alerts, yet hide the metricbeat migration parts.

I don't understand why the "alerts" buttons are hidden unless you're in setup mode in the first place. Why not just always make those visible?

But I also don't understand what the "idle state" is. Does entering setup mode turn off monitoring? Or disable alerts?

Why not just always make those visible?

Setup mode was introduced with the Metricbeat migration wizard as a way to let users experience configuration/edit/setup flows. We intentionally did not want these flows to be enabled by default, as they aren't designed to show live data (in the same way the UI normally works). With alerting, we decided to leverage this by allowing users to enter Setup Mode and have the ability to view and edit all Stack Monitoring alerts.

But I also don't understand what the "idle state" is.

This is probably a poor choice of words on my part. What I really mean is Setup Mode allows the user to see all alerts, even if these alerts aren't in a "firing" state ("idle" is the word I choose as the opposite of "firing").

Does entering setup mode turn off monitoring?

It doesn't turn it off, but it is designed to not necessarily show the live data. When users enter this mode, they should be aware that they are in a "configuration" mode rather than a data viewing mode.

Or disable alerts?

Alerts will continue to run regardless if the user is in Setup Mode or not.
