element desktop is not working with screenreaders

Steps to reproduce

1. Where are you starting? What can you see?
   I log in, verify, enter a channel, and try to read messages, it's currently impossible with a screenreader to navigate the messages list.

   enable voiceover on a mac, for example, and try to navigate the program's messages list.
