A preference to enable / disable previews per user or room would be great. Another idea could be to only show previews when hovering over a link for some time.

Personally, I prefer a compact layout with little noise. Default-expanded previews make it hard to catch up in channels that have a lot of bot / link content.

Yep - the previews are making rooms like #freenode_#wikimedia-dev:matrix.org or #freenode_#wikimedia-operations:matrix.org unusable... +1 for user options to turn them off. Maybe a 'never show previews from this domain'?

Closing in favor of these issues:

• It's already possible to disable URL previews so you don't see them anymore and per-room settings.
  • All settings -> Preferences -> Enable inline URL previews by default
  • Room settings -> General -> URL Previews
• Syntax to force/hint hiding the URL preview: Add syntax to force hide URL preview for a link you're posting element-meta#876
• Disable per-user:
  • Ability to disable URL previews for a given user (or for bots)? element-meta#1275
  • Add an option to disable URL previews for specific users in specific rooms #11211
