Steps to reproduce

  1. Enable "new breadcrumbs" in labs

Outcome

What did you expect?

I expect to be able to see at a glance the current working set of conversations I am juggling. I expect to be able to use my muscle memory to click on the same spatial location to go back to the previous conversation i was in (or the one from two ago, etc).

What happened instead?

I can no longer see my working set of conversations unless I mouseover a fiddly hoverover, and I can no longer rapidly click between my N-1, N-2 etc rooms, as first I have to navigate with a fiddly hoverover and /then/ select an option. What was previously a single move+click is now a move+hoverover+move+click, which is sufficient hassle that it's not worth trying.

Personally I love the new breadcrumbs: I never enabled the old ones because they're distracting, animated, kept shuffling on activity, etc. I don't need them that often but when I do, I find the new ones very useful and easy enough to use.

Arguably however, the new Ctrl+K quick navigation also offers a version of "hidden breadcrumbs", which may be good enough for me instead, I just seldom remember that they're there.

I like the new breadcrumbs and agree with @HarHarLinks that it's less distracting and cleaner to not have them on screen when not in use, but it needs full keyboard controls, which I've already requested in #20085 . That's a good point about the ctrl-k menu effectively acting as the same thing when nothing is typed. There's already breadcrumbs there.

This isn't a regression because its a feature under development.

I think this is a great insight!

I think new breadcrumbs become a little redundant with them also being present in Spotlight

While true, still when I do use them, I find myself using them here

rather than in spotlight.

@nadonomy , @t3chguy , and myself have discussed removing them as they are not fit for purpose as are not at all accessible.

It's likely that we will remove this labs feature in the coming weeks
