Emoji picker inconsistently fails to appear when : is the first character

Steps to reproduce

I usually use the : key to bring up the emoji picker, and then type the text to narrow-down emojis.

1. Click in the message composer box
2. Type :
3. Start typing an emoji name, for example :smile:
4. Observe that the emoji picker often does not appear
5. Clear the composer box and start typing non-emoji text
6. Type :
7. Start typing an emoji name, for example :smile:
8. Observe that the emoji picker much more consistently appears

Outcome

What did you expect?

I expected the emoji-picker to appear consistently when typing : and typing the start of an emoji name. The emoji-picker should also appear when the : is the first character in the message

What happened instead?

The emoji-picker inconsistently appears when using : to bring up the emoji-picker, and appears less often when : is the first character in the message
