Not very popular so far, though. But, at least, GNOME, KDE & Microsoft are discussing support of this in their terminals :) And Chrome OS seems to have it implemented already.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/vte/-/issues/2495 (discussed)
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=372116 (patch ready)
microsoft/terminal#2946 (supported)

iTerm2 on MacOS already has this:
https://iterm2.com/appcasts/2x.txt
and also xterm does:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=598910
kovidgoyal's kitty also supports this:

Windows Terminal already supports it. Its support would be a major improvement in user experience under WSL.

Supported in tty backend since 590747e.
For support in internal VT there is separate issue, #1422.
Closing.
