Michael Engen was born in George Town, Cayman Islands. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Florida, attending a sequence of schools, each farther North than the one that preceded it, before finally enrolling as an undergraduate student at the University of Florida in 2013.

He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 2015 and began his graduate studies later that year. He earned a Master of Science degree in mathematics in 2017 and finally a Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics in 2021.
