Testing Overhaul - How do we proceed?

The current testing suite is a bit archaic and is in need of some sprucing up. In addition to fixing the unit tests, we also need to find a good way to handle testing the visual aspects of the library without having to maintain large and weird HTML eye tests for each type of chart. Treat this issue as a discussion board for the issue at large.
