Blockchain ekstrakto

Blockchain ekstrakto is a Python program which extracts all Bitcoin blockchain data using Bitcoin Core.
It aims at providing the purest dataset thanks to a transparent collection method, limiting processing between ground truth and the output.
It collects data at application level using RPC (Remote Procedure Call) to request Bitcoin Core and writes a line corresponding to a full block JSON response.

Prerequisites

You need an access to a Bitcoin Core full node with a synchronized blockchain.
Follow this tutorial.
Configure your bitcoin.conf file to allow Remote Procedure Call :

Installing

Clone this repository.

Install pypy3 (linux)

This code runs faster with Pypy :

$ apt install pypy3

Install python dependencies

Install dependencies using pip3 :

$ pip3 install -r requirements.txt

Edit config.ini :

Running

If there are no arguments specified, blockchain extraction will start from the last block mined a.k.a best block to the first block mined a.k.a genesis block

Running with nohup to keep the task in background:

cd blockchain-ekstrakto
nohup pypy3 blockchain-ekstrakto.py 2> blockchain.err | gzip -c > blockchain.gz &

The output file size for the full blockchain.gz is close to 500 GB, with a collection duration close to 32 hours.

You can specify a target block :

# This will parse the blockchain from the end to the target block
pypy3 blockchain-ekstrakto.py --target 500000 | gzip -c > last_block_to_block_500000.gz

You can specify a source block and a target block :

# This will parse the blockchain from the source block to the target block
pypy3 blockchain-ekstrakto.py --source 200000 --target 100000 | gzip -c > block_200000_to_block_100000.gz

Monitoring

Monitor the extraction with stderr output file :

# It will show you last blocks written
tail -f blockchain.err
