I love this idea but the lack of testing support makes it 100% useless for anything other than doing tutorials and such, which is fine but it's also a shame all this work can't be leveraged to streamline the process of creating production apps.

(Technically it is already merged which is why I closed the issue. We will release as a "hidden" feature in 0.3.0 because there are still some issues we are working out, and later release it officially.)

Awesome! If I need to start working on a production app right away, can I start with the current version then add testing later once that feature gets released? Will it be ease to upgrade?

Yes, upgrading is generally a matter of bumping the devDependency version.
We also publish migration instructions in the changelog:
