Black screen or vanilla Wii menu

I have tested all 3 releases of this on my copy of Dolphin emulator, following the tutorial for RiiConnect24.

On the first release I get a black screen with an FPS counter saying 60. On the second and latest releases booting the boot.dol file with Dolphin causes the Wii to boot as normal and it takes me to the Wii menu.

Am I doing this wrong? How do I boot this? I see other people mentioning similar issues but the issues were posted last year and left unresolved.

I will update if I fix it myself because I intend to keep trying and testing. It's important to note I am using Ishiiruka-Dolphin (1136) because I prefer it's features and it makes certain games run better on my computer, so please let me know if I have to use a specific version of Dolphin.
