Flux project roadmap for 2024

Happy to annonce that we have updated the roadmap with the next milestones for the Flux project.

There are two main directions that we are taking this year:

• General Availability for the Flux APIs & integrations with Helm, S3-compatible storage and image update automation.
• Innovations in the continuous delivery space with a focus on OCI artifacts and supply chain security.

We have defined the milestones for Q2 and Q3 of 2024 as follows:

• Flux v2.3 - completed - released on May 13 2024.
• Flux v2.4- in progress - scheduled in August after Kubernetes 1.31 release.
• Flux v2.5 - provisional - TBA after Kubernetes 1.32 release.

We have changed the milestone format to include detailed information about API promotions, deprecations and removals, as well as Flux and Kubernetes supported versions.

Warning

Starting with v2.4 we are gradually removing deprecated beta API versions from the Flux distribution. We advise users to update Flux to a supported GA version e.g. v2.2 as soon as possible.

The milestones marked as provisional are subject to change based on the project’s priorities and the community’s feedback.

Please note that the Flux maintainers prioritize fixes to defects affecting GA APIs and security issues over new features. Depending on the volume of incoming issues and the complexity of the fixes, the roadmap may be adjusted and new features may be postponed to the next milestone.

Important

We invite the community to help us shape the future of Flux. We have in place an RFC process for new features and enhancements proposals. We are keen to work with the community on RFCs and drive the project forward in a sustainable manner. We want to enable community members to take full ownership of Flux features and share the responsibility of feature stability and longer-term maintenance.
