This talk will argue that the Structuralist view of language, with structure divorced from the rest of the communicative situation, as well as other problems, has been harmful to linguistics, and so we should move away from the idea that linguistics is the study of language, and instead adopt a multimodal empirical approach to communication. Looking at communicative behavior (of which language is only one optional part) instead of language structure allows us to see the commonalities between communicative behavior and other types of behavior and thereby gives us a window into understanding other types of human and animal behavior. Because of this, unlike the ivory tower Structuralist approaches, which have made linguistics a largely irrelevant discipline, the communication-based approach is of great utility in many fields and occupations.
