When a hardware rule is removed while a coil is energized because of that hardware rule, it stays energized until the hardware rule is added again, regardless of the switch state. For example, when using MPF and losing the last ball while holding the flipper button, the hardware rule for the flipper will be removed, but the flipper stays up. Instead, it should turn off as soon as the hardware rule is removed.
