when putting in an artist name (such as "metallica"), no results are displayed. I have tried using artistexplorer.spotify.com on multiple browsers with multiple queries and I get the same result on all of them. thanks.

same here
... but it works if you download the code and follow the install instructions (running locally). You need to set environment variables in the shell for SPOTIPY_CLIENT_ID and SPOTIPY_CLIENT_SECRET (note, spotipy not spotify).
