I do not know what is your approach, but I decided to share the one we have been using before. In geocompr and geocompy, we use the following heuristic: when the commit is small/uncontroversial (e.g., fixing a typo, adding a simple sentence or two) then it can go directly to main; otherwise we do PRs.
