There are some useful keywords and constructs in the newer JSONSchema drafts which will help to simplify and improve the Mapfile schema.

The latest python-jsonschema library introduces several new dependencies [1] so also investigate switching to https://horejsek.github.io/python-fastjsonschema/ (and test performance on large Mapfiles between the two). Note https://github.com/horejsek/python-fastjsonschema is Python3 only.
