This issue should be closed. It is an implemented feature.

... actually, it's not, is it. I confused myself by working around it with a custom shelf that I'd named 'unread'.

In 'wide cards' view it shows the percentage read, so if this is tracked/calculated then perhaps something could be done with this as a workaround. e.g., put a badge on the book cover (or elsewhere) that shows something like a little pie chart indicated percentage complete up until a checkmark for completed.

It's somewhat easier to sort quickly through a list using a graphical indicator than the textual clue of percent read. And perhaps this is quicker/easier than filtering the list of all books?
