Newlines being removed from custom command in magic enter

I'm trying to add ls to the "magic enter" functionality. It does execute and list files. However, the newlines are stripped and the output is thus unreadable.

Is it possible to get "proper" output and how would one accomplish this?

I changed the 'magic enter' functionality to use zsh's statusline feature in the main branch. Its not released yet (want to give some time to test) but if you could try it out would appreciate the look.
