Easier changing of date values?

As a follow-up to #56, could it be possible to make the "empty (zero) date" (i.e. the 0100-01-01) show up as "today date" when opening the date picker? I've added a date field in my form, and I want to be able to keep it empty (as default). But then, when I click it to set to a non-zero date later, the date-picker shows a year "100", and it's somewhat tedious to change it to year 2019, then current month, then finally pick the day. Maybe there could be a "today" button in the date-picker, quickly moving the selection window to today? Or maybe it could be possible to type the current date "free-form" in the date field? Typing text in the field doesn't seem to work for me.

Just to let you know, fortunately a workaround with just using a text field instead seems like it might work for me for now.
