my usecase is converting epub files into hugodir.. Very often xhtml is ext name

You can set the URL in front matter. Alternatively there is an open issue about setting the extension for all files (html vs aspx etc.).

So any files (no matter ext) in content dir will have its frontmatter parsed?

thx, it may be related .. but my issue is more limited in scope (and a lot easier to fix I should think)
just adding 2 more ext names for "html" into func https://github.com/spf13/hugo/blob/77c60a3440806067109347d04eb5368b65ea0fe8/helpers/general.go#L65

This is handled by output formats in Hugo 0.20.

this issue is regarding input. Can you reference code solving xh as input in content dir?
