Is there some obvious way to make this project play well with models already currently in admin?

I have the same question. If I use
translator.register(Artist, ArtistTranslation)

then I can no longer use
admin.site.register(Artist, ArtistAdmin)

Can you give me some tips as to how to fix this? (I can program, but some pointers would be helpful!)
