Was: Gittip is not the right choice for the Internet Archive?

This is a Gittip bug.

@textfiles:

So, I've been working very hard with co-worker Jake Johnson (and everyone else) to add subscription donations to @internetarchive.

When that happens, I will ask you to consider subscribing donations to the @internetarchive because it makes life better and pays for drives

@robertjwhitney Apparently not, since they're working on a different solution. :-(

Oh yeah I know. That is disappointing.

Maybe phrase the issue as a question to invite discussion?

I must preface this note with the fact that I am a Internet archive employee working to refine our donation page, and not someone who makes financial decisions or puts forward the opinion of the archive.

Currently, the Internet archive donation page accepts payments from Amazon, PayPal, and Bitcoin. The addition of Bitcoin came from community request to make this a method of payment. Since then, the Internet archive has become a leader in the area of accepting bitcoin as an alternative currency.

The addition of subscription payments to our payment options is a relatively recent project, and one that has taken a while to implement. The current scope of the project is to make subscription options available for our current payment options, and do so without disrupting the ability of our audience to donate the previous ways.

The Internet archive is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which accepts donations in a tax-deductible manner. Using Gittip as an individual just now, I found that it was heavily geared towards use by individuals, and not towards organizations. I would also point out that the EFF, arguably the best possible case for use by a non-profit, has not signed up yet either, and that whatever the situation is for this, it's less about an organization "choosing" not to implement GitTip (which implies intent) than one of focusing on the basics, and not yet reaching out to even further donation and related mechanisms.

Looking for a solution, I would ask you understand that we are focusing on this new round of changes, and after that, I can see what our financial director says about the process of joining an organization like gittip. It would probably help a lot if Gittip had a one-sheet explaining its usage by nonprofit institutions.

Thanks for the awesome feedback, @textfiles. :-)

Better support for organizations and non-profits is something we're going to be actively working on this next year.

Closing in light of our decision to shut down Gratipay.

Thank you all for a great run, and I'm sorry it didn't work out! 😞 💃
