This is a long while off, but I'd like to make saving programs work via git. Each new save is a new commit.

All in the background, of course.

This will require moving off of Heroku and onto our own servers.

Still will be sweet.

Still a good idea?

I think it is a great idea.. but to be put farther off. We have more important issues to solve and as this would probably require moving it's also kind of high investment.

Yup, it's a high end feature. It's require mixing off heroku for one...

Before the possibility of Rails Girls Summer of Code, I was working on GitHub OAuth that would let you create a GitHub repository for your Hackety program instead of hosting our own Git service through Hackety. If that sounds desirable I'd be happy to resume working on it.

That would be pretty cool

Consider me on the case then. 🎯

Do you have a proof of concept that you could upload somewhere for us to
take a look at? That sounds really cool.

That sounds nothing short of amazing if the github API offers all that. The RGSoC team is currently working on omniauth etc. nothing is merged yet though. Would be good to coordinate with them I guess, will make them aware of this issue here.

@jrgifford not yet, I started the branch with GitHub OAuth integration but it sounds like @hacketyhack/rgsoc are working on that as part of #8. Once it lands or GitHub falls outside the scope of it I will take up this mantle once more.

The way I envision it would be once you've oauth'd GitHub you can

  • Specify repositories you've created already as Hackety programs 🎱
  • Create a GitHub-backed Hackety program from Hackety.com that shows you the GitHub push/clone url. 💨
  • Stretch: Use the content API to convert existing Hackety programs from S3 tarballs (that's what they are currently yes?) 🎇
