This project is developing a tool to help homeless service providers match roommates to create stable shared housing environments. We're working with our partner LA Family Housing, and in conversations with many of the other agencies and nonprofits in LA county, such as the Housing Initiative of LA County, United Way, Safe Place for Youth (SPY), and St. Joseph's Center.
Homelessness in LA County affects 40,000-60,000 people each year, 75% of whom are unsheltered. While programs exist to help people find housing, the number of available beds and units is far outpaced by the growing number of people needing assistance.
One way to provide housing to more people is to match tenants together with properties that are able to house multiple people. This Shared Housing solution houses more people without building new units, and usually at a lower per-person cost than if each tenant lived in a separate unit.

Hack for LA's Shared Housing project aims to match tenants both to each other and to suitable housing, to create safe, stable home environments. If you're a local tech professional interested in helping people experiencing homelessness, we'd love to hear from you. Please see Joining the Shared Housing Team to learn more.
