The names for the AWS environment variables as documented here are:

  • AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID
  • AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY
  • AWS_DEFAULT_REGION

Most tools that interact with AWS respect these environment variables, but Terraform uses:

  • AWS_ACCESS_KEY
  • AWS_SECRET_KEY
  • AWS_REGION

While this is documented I do not think it is the ideal user experience and differs from almost every other tool on the Internet which interacts with AWS.
