Story

This game needs a story. Not necessarily a full, movie style story, but just a little bit of explanation. Why is the player fighting monsters? What year/place is it? What is the town? How did the player get to where he/she is?
Just answer basic questions, not randomly put into a town and expected to fight monsters for no apparent reason. Story can be extended into quests, maybe able to find notes that explain the story further.

(I'm not a very good story teller.)
