[12:52pm] i think we could just img src="blank something or other" when offscreen by X pixels
[12:52pm] then bring it back when in view
[12:52pm] we already have a DIV placeholder the size of the image
[12:52pm] (for drag to resize)
[12:53pm] the load feature would be throttled

I've got this working roughly as I outlined in that IRC log pasted above. running tests on it but it seems to perform rather well.
