Stability work and bug fixes for v9 #268

Recently v10 was released and yanked because there were some bugs and it was unclear how multi-database is supported. We're back to a more stable release of v9. We use this gem heavily at Gusto and recently found some bugs on version 9. @ngan and I will be working on fixing those bugs and cleaning up the codebase.

Currently, version 9 does not support multi-database but we'd like to get it to a point where there are no bugs with apps using multi-database. That will set us up for success when we do implement data migrations for multi-database.
