Add better error reporting for errors in the notebook plugin

Currently most of the notebook plugin is "fire and forget" logic, and errors don't get reported back to the user in any useful way. Ideally errors should show up immediately in the client library - we shouldn't expect users to go check the log files on the server if something doesn't work.
