I'm not sure whether GitHub mentions this somewhere in GitHub docs, but Wiki sidebars and footers could be directory-specific just like on Gollum. For our Wiki, the use case is archiving. If a project or page in general becomes obsolete we move it to the Archive directory via Git. An Archive-specific sidebar and/or footer could be created and render fine. The rest of pages render regular sidebar and footer. So far, so good.
The problem is editing of sidebars using sidebar edit button. If a directory-specific sidebar is defined (in our case in Archive/), edit button would edit it even on other pages. That is the Home page, for example, renders _Sidebar.md correctly, but edits Archive/_Sidebar.md.
