KaTeX is a lot faster than MathJax. The switch may be fairly easy.

Wikipedia uses Texvc and MathJax handles these expressions pretty well with the aid of texvc compatibility extension. It looks like KaTeX, while faster, is not as comprehensive/compatible, at least not yet.

Katex does seem to work with texvc: KaTeX/KaTeX#1558
