Just to minimize the amount of dependencies of the package: what are we using freetype2 for, because it requires a system-level install of libfontconfig1-dev

is unavailable you can set INCLUDE_DIR and LIB_DIR manually via:
R CMD INSTALL --configure-vars='INCLUDE_DIR=... LIB_DIR=...'
