I recently hit an issue where I couldn't push to pypi during a release because I had :mod:'sciform' instead of ''sciform'' (can't use link in README.rst since it may not be used in the scope of the rest of the docs, especially on pypi). To get around this the release had to be failed and I had to make a new release with a new version number.
There should be some sort of dry run test that runs during PRs to check for this kind of thing.
