colSpan vertical table

How do you colSpan a vertical table? When I attempt to do it I get
"Error: Content needs to be a primitive, got: object"

Also, cli-table would highlight the left column for a vertical table (as a header), cli-table2 does not seem to do this by default. How would I enable this?
