i don't have any idea on how to test (as in, what/how i should test) but it'd probably be good to verify that all features and env variable flags work as intended

note about github actions: I should consider merging the release and test workflow into one so that releases get tested before being pushed.

Also, distinguishing between unit (python script) and integration (container) tests could be benefitial
