smart extension still generating LaTeX encoded \ldots from ellipses when turned off

For a Markdown to LaTeX conversion:

pandoc -f markdown -t latex-smart filename.md -o filename.tex

I have a test markdown file containing the following 'smart' typographic characters:

Some typographic ‘characters’ in “this document” are ellipsis… (space after or not) …plus—emdash—and en–dash.

the -smart extension turns off typographic conversion for all except the ellipsis—here's the resulting LaTeX:

Some typographic ‘characters’ in “this document” are ellipsis\ldots{} (space after or not) \ldots plus—emdash—and en–dash.

I'd expect -smart to prevent the conversion of the typographical ellipsis … into \ldots and (if there's no following space) \ldots{}.
