Drop zone size

Hey guys,
Is it possible to somehow control the size of the drop area?
I've noticed that the current size of the drop area depends on the size of the drop target step, is that correct?
Since my drop target step needs to be pretty small (20x20px), it makes it hard to snap another node to it. I'm trying to find a way to detect mouse drag near that step, way further than it is right now.

Also, is there a way to somehow override the drop positions of a step, to be not above/below/left/right, but maybe the center or the whole element itself. That would also be helpful.
