When you have a site with hundreds or thousands of articles, it's cumbersome to search for articles that people left checked-out. My experience is that newbie editors don't always remember to save their work or close the editor, which means someone has to find it in the backend and unlock it (if that person is not currently logged in) if more work is needed and they aren't around. If there was a way to filter on checked-out articles, this task would be much simpler. Currently the only way to find them quickly is to look in the content database table for rows "WHERE checked_in IS NULL".
