Fancy image/caption scrolling component

The scrolling effects for pictures on this site are amazing, especially on mobile: https://www.nature.com/immersive/d41586-023-03818-5/index.html :

• while scrolling, specific images stick to the page & seem to become the background
• the picture's caption slowly increases in opacity when it scrolls into view, then decreases in opacity
• if another picture follows the current picture, there is a swiping replacement effect as you scroll, otherwise it seems to scroll normally

Seems to be some javascript involved, but maybe the CSS God @jpanther knows how to pull it all off in pure CSS 😃 🙏🏼

I was wondering if there is an easy-ish way to do something similar with a partial or short code && if that could be in-built into the theme? Maybe it could be used as the default effect for the cover image?
