e.g.

@defVar(m, y)
@defVar(m, z)
getValue([y,z])

I don't understand this function really, no comments and its a bit cryptic and seems overly complicated now with varData etc

Good catch 👍. The code can be simpler, but at the price of less helpful error messages.
