Trying it on Linux makes the Linux client fail:

Dec 24 06:21:21 fv-az1947-425 openvpn[2180]: Options error: Unrecognized option or missing or extra parameter(s) in alpha-localhost.conf:24: register-dns

I don't want to make each client a dict though.
