According to http://askubuntu.com/questions/89417/how-to-span-single-wallpaper-over-dual-monitors, gnome desktop detection is not working. Likely something with the move to unity/gnome3? Investigate and fix.

The change to gsettings is the likely culprit (see http://askubuntu.com/questions/156713/change-desktop-background-with-terminal-ubuntu-12-04)
