I know nothing about it, but I saw https://ctan.org/pkg/linenoamsmath come in, and wondered if whatever it does should be incorporated into amsmath. Because on the face of it, seems like amsmath might as well work with lineno. Unless the patch is problematic, of course. Just an idea ...

Karl, this doesn't belong in amsmath, it belongs in lineno. It is only applicable if lineno is loaded and so it should not be inside amsmath at all, because it is adding lineno commands around the ams environments that are incorrect if lineno is not loaded (which is why the patch package loads both amsmath and lineno). I was intending to provide a similar patch but the author was faster. Anyway, ultimately it has to go into lineno (and there it could make use of the hook mechanism to apply the patches only if amsmath gets loaded at all).
