Compile and install custom kernel modules? (GPIO)

I would like to compile and install a kernel module like https://github.com/Embetronicx/Tutorials/tree/master/Linux/Device_Driver/GPIO-in-Linux-Device-Driver. I plan to modify this so that I can have a mock gpio device for testing purposes. I have been able to compile this but insmod driver.ko complains. Before I dig any deeper, is this a thing that's possible with lima? Thanks
