When I use my laptop, pressing the power button causes the dialog, "Shut down this system now?" to appear.

Normally when I press the power button I would like the default to be Suspend, not Shut Down. In such a case, I would merely need to press the power button and then the enter button to suspend my computer.

Hi Yekutiel,

I think you can set the default action to Suspend by going into the Cinnamon settings -> Power Management -> Extra Options -> When the power button is pressed:

I tested this, and it suspends automatically whenever I press the power button.

Let me know if this helps.

If you set the action to "Ask" in the power management settings:

You can then press [Alt] + [U] to quickly suspend the machine. I am not sure if you can set the suspend action as default when you press enter - I haven't found a way yet.
