For a while in Gnome-land people have discussed having Nautilus doubling as a file picker for apps that support the file picker portal which would allow users to have a more complete file picker, and specially be able to select files in icon view.

It would be really nice if Nemo also doubled as a file picker, since we would have access to three viewing modes and the more traditional UX Cinnamon is known for.

Nautilus is just getting this feature https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/3401. However in Nautilus they did the GTK4 migration first which isn't done in the Nemo codebase.

Nautilus having that feature was just presented in This week in GNOME:

It works very nicely (though not a big fan of GNOME's design)

On Mint's front it may take some time, especially if GTK4 is needed:
