For some reason there is no way to test or show maliit keyboard if there is no touchscreen.

This is really annoying as the keyboard would be usable for remote input, e.g. via KDE-Connect.

Also for testing themes etc without a matching device.

The most notable examples are these buttons not doing anything

  • SDDM login manager: bottom left, "virtual keyboard"
  • KDE Plasma: "virtual keyboard" button in the system tray

I have a convertible and know they with a touchscreen the keyboard shows fine.

Please allow to configure somewhere that the keyboard can be shown regardless. This could then be toggled with a switch in the Plasma settings.

Yes, please. I just spent a long time compiling these just to realize it does absolutely nothing without a touchscreen. I want my KDE to be usable via controller.
