The daemon doesn't work on its own. It's only a bridge that allows radeon-profile to run as normal user and that's it. Though I sincerely think letting it read configuration would be nice as we can tweak the hardware without having to keep radeon-profile open.
Also, it's possible for radeon-profile to lose connection with the daemon, causing all settings to be temporarily reverted. See this issue in radeon-profile. For now I recommend just running radeon-profile as root.
