Same behaviour as Nemo: icons arranged regularly and in a fixed position.
Actual behaviour
This is not a trivial bug, but a major flaw that has existed in Caja (since the beginning?).
In the icon view, the images are arranged irregularly (according to their width) instead of in a fixed grid as in Nemo, for example.
Consequences:
The items displayed in the window change (scroll bar moves) when the thumbnails are calculated.
The direction arrows behave erratically and the horizontal arrows do not follow the sorting order used.
Steps to reproduce the behaviour
Any icon view
Mate general version
Mate 1.26.3
and earlier versions.

Linux Mint 22
and earlier versions.

I assume you are showing icons of more than one width? By this I mean the entire image
width not just the visible portion. This has always been problematic, stopping it requires
forcing all the icons to the same width.
What icon theme are you using?
Also note that we are seeing a LOT of issues in and only in Mint right now. If this is one of Mint's
icon themes at fault, it suggests they added code to Nemo to force the icons to the same width, then
stopped shipping a full set of icons for each possible size or using a single .svg icon which should scale
to the desired size.
